Chris Atkinson Thank you for reaching this site.

I have worked as a Notary Public since 1993, when I passed the professional qualification exams. These are additional exams to those necessary to qualify as a Solicitor - I qualified to practise as a Solicitor in 1977. I am a member of the Notaries Society and I am a past President of the Bradford Law Society.

I now have over thirty five years experience of legal work in West Yorkshire. In 2008 I ceased practising as a Solicitor and I now work as a full time Notary Public. This enables me more easily to react without delay to the often urgent nature of Notarial business. Please note that in appropriate cases I will work outside usual office hours including weekends and I will see clients either at my office (which has a large free car park), or at their own office or home.

This is a small web site of just a few pages but I hope that it contains information which you will find useful. Lower down on this page is a brief description of the nature of a Notary Public's work.

At the bottom of the page are links to pages advising you about the likely level of fees, about practical matters of identification and law, and a link to help you find my offices and to send me an email.

A Notary Public is an officer of the law appointed by the Court of Faculties (after due examination) whose public office and duty it is to draw, attest, or certify under his seal of office, for use anywhere in the world, deeds and other documentation.

A Notary Public authenticates documents under his signature and official seal in such a manner as to render them acceptable to judicial or other public authorities in the country they are to be used. A Notary Public also administers oaths and declarations for use in proceedings in England and elsewhere; notes or certifies transactions relating to negotiable instruments; and draws up protests or other formal papers relating to occurrences on the voyages of ships and their navigation as well as the carriage of cargo ships. The principal function of a Notary Public is to substantiate evidence of human activities. Some functions are listed below:

LATEST NEWS - ECERTIFICATION --------------- NOTARISATION BY EMAIL AND INTERNET

The Notaries Society working with the Regulatory Body of Notaries (The Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury) and with Globalsign Ltd /Adobe Inc have created a system that allows electronic notarisation of documents to be completed, thereby offering all the advantages of the internet in terms of speed, efficiency and reach, whilst maintaining security and trust.
The eNotarised document can be a scanned PDF of an original signed paper document with the added advantage that a digital signature is embedded into the document to verify the authenticity and integrity. All recipients who view the document anywhere in the world will be able to verify this with their PDF reader. The certificate to create the signature resides on a USB cryptographic token issued to me, as an individual, by GlobalSign.
When I sign, my computer confirms the time and date with GlobalSign and the status of my certificate offering a secure audit trail for the signing event.
If the document is emailed to a recipient or downloaded and viewed via the internet, the signature properties will remain. Any amendment of the data or corruption of the document will be highlighted by the PDF reader with a visible red cross.
This system has just been launched in the UK and it is already gaining momentum around the world particularly in USA and Commonwealth countries. Also the system is being used by Companies which need to pass verifiable documents between their offices and to third parties, whether Nationally or Internationally.

Click on the link, to see an example. To return to my site, then click the back button in your browser [PDF file]

When the pdf document downloads you can scroll it to see the visible signature. At the top of the page on the right (or on some browsers it is at the bottom of the page on the left!) is a button to click, to see the signature properties.
